Project #2 Proposal

Visualizing Medical Data In Virtual Reality

Objective of the project is to Survey VR Data Visualization Software for Research. VR enables learning about tissue structure and anatomy using an immersive 3D visualization. HMDs are already being used in medical situations. Groups at Stanford use the Microsoft HoloLens to visualize breast cancer tumors before and during surgery. VR models can be used to study the vasculature of organs such as the retina, brain, heart etc.

Explore available visualisation softwares, medical data and build VR softwares to aid medical research and study.

Expected Wiki Contributions:

Create a VR for Medical Research Page

Document current available softwares (Freesurfer, 3D Slice, Lighthaus, Fetal Heart VR)

Collect and test available data sources

Write Comparative study on these softwares

Write tutorial on selected softwares

Project Timeline:

4/07 - Have 3D scans to test tools/applications (Freesurfer, 3D Slice, Lighthaus, Fetal Heart VR)

4/12 - Document a Medical Data Visualisation page on wiki, with initial thoughts on VR applications

4/14- Load scans and visualise different medical data scans

4/21 - Class Activity: Visualise medical data in VR

4/26 - Work with Unity to build application to load and visualise models

4/28 - Project proposal report, publish tutorial

5/05 - Complete project
