Researched with Jeff's Rewind group and designed a user study that measures impact that YURT has on users' memorability, desirability, and believability.

I'm interested in exploring tools we use to build VR/AR spaces. I love playing VR headset games.

  • 1 hour: Learned about 5 different startups in China that challenge the status quo of traveling. My favorite was Zanadu that shows drone-recorded immersive view of travel hotspots that let users decide where to travel before they go in reality.

  • 30 minutes: Watched CES VR demonstrations from Sony, Intel, and Samsung. My favorite was Samsung 4D VR experience that lets a user fly a plane.

Deliverable #1

Description: Prepare workshop that would allow us to gather data on VR hardware and softwares and how we can improve to engage more people in VR

Attribution: You can find our names in “Findings” under subheading “III. Activities” (it’s a long scroll!) For the workshop, I’ve been responsible for writing survey questions for participants and volunteers in the following activities: software evaluation, troubleshooting, and what the different VR apps are used for. 

Deliverable #2

Description: Analyze ways to improve VR engagement using surveys from participants and observations from volunteers

Attribution: Ankita and I are brainstorming ways to visualize data, but for now, in “Findings” under subheading “V. Ideas for Data Representation”, I’ve inserted pictures (first, word cloud for word association questions; second, bar graphs for multiple choice questions) that helped us formulate survey questions based on how we want to analyze and visualize data.

Deliverable #3

Description: Analyze and contribute to VR software and hardware test data 

Attribution: We haven’t done the user study yet, but once data and analysis become available, for VR software (one of the activities I was responsible for), I will attribute accordingly in the manuscript under “Comparisons” -> “VR Development Software”.

This section is structured as follows:

• Setting up meeting times with Ankita to continue working on findings and metrics

  • • This is the starting point of planning for user study and workshop.

• Brainstorming different metrics and asking questions about user study to David Whitney. 

  • • David Whitney recently completed and presented his research, so learning from how he recruited participants, formulated questions, and designed user study would inspire us to ask, execute, gather, and analyze the right people, study, and data.

• Drafting User Study Details document

  • • User Study Details is the backbone to the post-workshop phase of “Findings” section of the Manuscript. It focuses on analyzing survey questions from volunteers and participants.

• Meeting with Jonathan for possible collaboration with Mosaic+ and met with Zach to learn how to use HTC Vive for hardware activity

  • • We really needed more hands on setting up and running rounds of dry run for the workshop, so collaboration with Mosaic+ will be a great opportunity to do just that. Learning how to use HTC Vive is needed for the Hardware activity of the workshop.

• Experimenting with A-Frame to make "hello world" show up

  • • I’m responsible for drafting instructions for volunteers and participants for the Software Evaluation activity of the workshop, and A-Frame will be used.

• Booking rooms for activities and settling logistics with Ankita

  • • We need rooms for workshop activities. Settling logistics will help us envision how the workshop will be run, and sorting out details (such as how our Drive folders will be organized, what files we need to write - instructions? survey questions? forms? emails? - to ensure we’re all set for organizing workshop)

• Completing surveys for participants and observers for software review activity

  • • Everything above this activity has been focused on Deliverable #1, but this activity marks as the preparation for setup of Deliverable #2 and #3. We need solid surveys that would relate with our visualization of data so that analysis has more direction and purpose.

• Revising documents (e.g. survey forms for participants and volunteers) and creating banner for event

  • • The survey forms will be the main factor of collecting data from participants throughout the workshop (Deliverable #1), which will be used for analysis later (Deliverables #2 and #3). Banner is needed for outreach and marketing to make Deliverable #1 successful.

• Creating flashcards and more instructions for volunteer and participant for activities in software and troubleshooting

  • • Flashcards are needed as part of activity for Deliverable #1, and instructions are to give direction for volunteers to lead people having their first experience with VR. Instructions are more like worksheets for participants. I’ve authored those for Software Evaluation and Troubleshooting activities. All of those apply to Deliverable #1.

3/15 - VR Workshop Day! We’ll be gathering data through surveys throughout activities.

3/20, 3/22, 4/3 - Review and analyze data and speak with RIVR founder Siu-li Khoe for updates & insights

4/5, 4/10 - Share data gathered in class and add to manuscript

4/12 - Possibly do another run-through of workshop with RIVR community in preparation of second user study

4/17 - Consider other new data that the class gathers and incorporate into findings page (e.g. any new softwares or hardwares to do measurements for?)

4/19, 4/24 - Find ways to improve from first workshop when planning for second workshop
