Researched some collaborative VR software
Setup Quest 2
1/27/21 - 6 Hours
At first, I forgot about incorporating scientific visualization so I looked into collaborative VR software
I was also really intrigued by Google Earth VR.
I was feeling homesick and it was nice to go through my city (I realized I'm directionally challenged, however).
It was also an interesting aspect to simulate "star gazing".
I zipped up the objective images here
1/28/21 - 4 Hours
Researched software to use that involves VR, collaboration and data visualization.
Came up with different software that had the possible trio.
Ended up contacting TechViz for a demo.
Decided to choose TechViz for the project
Came up with three Project Ideas
How easy is the software to learn how to visualize data and collaborate on?
Things I’m going to do
Learn how to use the software, demo and setup
Use AutoCAD to visualize data
Multisite collaboration eval from different locations (via VPN maybe?)
One class activity
Accessing the same visualization from AutoCAD from another location?
Potential deliverables
evaluations of features and quality
tutorials showing how to use software for data visualization purposes
measurements of how long it takes and how difficult it is for a group to do a tutorial
How effective are heterogenous display systems while doing the above?
Things I’m going to do
Share&Viz
Powerwall TechViz
Maybe Immersion Room
One class activity
R Sketching: draw on your 3D CAD model during a remote collaboration session
Potential deliverables
evaluations/comparison of features and quality
tutorials showing how to use software for data visualization purposes
measurements of how long it takes and how difficult it is for a group to do a tutorial
What are its best use cases?
Things I’m going to do
Design Reviews?
VR workstation ergonomics
One class activity
R Sketching: draw on your 3D CAD model during a remote collaboration session
Potential deliverables
evaluations/comparison of features and quality

2/1/2021 -1.5 hours
Explored the DinoVR tutorial and completed the objectives in the tutorial.
I zipped up the images here so that it wouldn't consume too much space. I also explored some more options and took screenshots of it.
I was also dealing with some spec issues with TechViz
2/3/2021 - 2 hours
Expanded my project plan to include milestones until March.
2/9
Setup TechViz on Paperspace and Oculus. Follow Up on their email if they don’t respond soon. Document the process for the tutorial.
2/11
Setup Share&Viz and CAD software. Document your process for the setup.
2/18
Evaluation of ShareViz with the Software metrics after sketching in 3D CAD software.
2/23
Setup Fly&Viz and CAD software. Document your process for the setup.
2/25
Evaluation of Fly&Viz with the Software metrics after sketching in 3D CAD software.
3/2
Comparison Share&Viz and Fly&Viz according to the images below and :
Budgetary, functionality, usability, technology preferences, scalability
Some UIUX metrics
3/4
Finish all the documentation for tutorial and comparison and upload it to wiki.
2/4/2021 - 2.5 hours
Devised a new plan since TechViz specs didn't work out.
Project plan:
Evaluate the state of avatars in VR and research techniques for designing better avatars.
Softwares I’m going to use where you can whiteboard in 3D/play games (which make good use of avatars)
Spatial
Frame VR
EchoVR
RecRoom
Things I’m going to evaluate
How easy is it to build a VR app with avatars?
What visual features are missing in most (if not all) VR avatars?
To what extent would more realistic avatars improve collaborative experiences?
In class activity
Play either EchoVR or RecRoom in class to see how we can improve collaborative experiences in Spatial using avatars.
Deliverables
List of research techniques for designing better avatars
Evaluate current state of avatars
Ways to improve collaborative experiences using avatars in Spatial by using in class activity
Milestones
Setup all software on Quest and Paperspace. Create avatars and document the process of setting it up. Add to wiki if possible.
Add all the tutorials to the wiki. Explore the different avatars in each software.
Come up with a list of research techniques to evaluate avatars from google scholar.
Evaluate different softwares’ avatars based on the above research techniques
In class activity for RecRoom and EchoVR: Set a particular goal and task and accomplish this.
How can Spatial incorporate a better collaborative experience from the above VR games?
Revise all documentation and deliverables and publish to the wiki. (Some buffer in case any of the above milestones get pushed back)

Writing project proposal and creating presentation
2/8/2021 - 1 hour
Spent an hour trying to contact MeetinVR to try one more time but in vain.
2/9/2021 - 2 hours
Completed the rest of the tutorials (especially EchoVR took a while because I have motion sickness and it was not accessible).
2/10/2021 - 4 hours
Added tutorials to the wiki and explored the softwares to get a better feel.
Met with Paul to experiment Spatial together: Here are some screenshots that I took.
2/11/2021 - 2/14/2021 - 5 hours
Reading through multiple research papers to come up with a list of techniques to evaluate avatars in VR
2/16/2021 - 2 hours
