Project: Comparing user understanding of bird migration data through AR visualization and 2D web map visualization. The goal is to understand how interacting with visualizations within AR can lead to a better understand of data.
AR visualization: User selects their location and season. hey will have a selection of birds that migrate to that location during that season appear to them. The user will be able to interact with the birds to learn more about them. This includes bird size, noises, information about the migration path, and the species.
Potential additional AR visualization: User views a bird species' migration path on a map from above.
2D web map visualization:
Scientific Data: Bird migration data and animal tracking data found here:
Osprey Bierregaard North and South America migration data
Data requested and accessed from eBird to be used for Providence bird migration data
In-class activity: Class will view AR visualization and interact with species that migrate to location. They will also view and interact with the web based 2D map. I aim to answer the following questions about AR, influenced by the Seven Scenarios:
Evaluating visual data analysis and reasoning
Question: How does the AR visualization tool of viewing and interacting with birds migrating to your location support an understanding of the migration data? Does interacting with the birds help the user better understand, remember the data being presented (bird species, migration path, bird sounds, bird quantity), and create an analysis of the data?
Evaluating communication through visualization
Question: Do users better understand the data presented in AR or in the 2D visualization? Which was better in explaining the data? Did interacting with the data enhance understanding?
Evaluating user performance
Question: How difficult / easy was the AR visualization vs 2D visualization to view and interact with? Did one visualization have more glitches that lessened the user performance?
Evaluating user experience
Question: Was the AR or 2D experience more frustrating? Was the user able to accomplish the set interaction goals? Did the interactions presented help enhance the experience or overwhelm the user (usability of interactions)? What features in AR helped enhance the experience?
