VRChat Activity

Overview

This VRChat activity is meant to give the class an introduction to multiplayer VR Games.

Setup (Before Class)

1. Download VRChat from either the Oculus Store (recommended) or SteamVR. 

• It is probably easier to download this directly to your Quest 2 instead of connecting to a PC (you will have the same experience either way)

2. (Optional): Create an account on the VRChat website (alternatively, you can just sign in with your Oculus account, but if you want to keep your accounts separate, you can do this instead).

3. Open the Application on your headset and sign in with either your Oculus account or a VRChat account.

4. Depending on whether or not you have signed in before, you may have to choose a random avatar immediately. This is somewhat arbitrary since you can change this later! Alternatively you may be given a default avatar and just spawn in a room.

5. Press on the menu button on your controller to bring up a menu to change any settings that will make you feel more comfortable. 

Steps (In Class)

1. Open the Application and sign in again if you aren't signed in

   • You will load a world and have to click on a "Go" button to advance to the world

   • If you have already set things up, you should just be entering a home space, but otherwise you might spawn in a tutorial world

2. Press the left menu button to bring up a UI, and go into settings

3. Try changing some of the movement options/any other settings you prefer and take note of any differences/preferences you have for 

4. If you walk to the mirror in the room, here you can select your avatar

   • Alternatively, you can also do this from one of the menus

   • Alternatively, you can also do this by going into a portal (e.g., "Al's Avatar Corridors"), but this might take a long time since you have to load another world

5. In your social tab, find your username

   • If you signed in with oculus, this will probably be whatever your oculus username is, possibly with some random characters following it (so double check that!)

   • If you signed in with VRChat, this will be whatever you used to sign in.

6. (For one person): Type in your partner's/partners' username when you go to Social>Search in the top right, and then send them a friend request

7. (For the other person(s)): Accept the friend request from the social tab.

8. After becoming friends, you should be able to invite/join whatever rooms you are in

   • You can do this again from the social tab and by clicking on their profile

   • The invite for the other person will appear with a little player icon in the top left of the main menu

9. Once you are in the same space, try unmuting your mic in game (should be unmuted by default, but just in case, do this in the same menu from the left button) and communicating over that instead of zoom.

10. There are some pens in the room on the table by the couches, so try drawing a picture together! Ideally, you should post a picture on the class activity board.

11. If time permits, feel free to do whatever you want (you can even try joining one of the public worlds, although since this is a game, there are probably a lot of random people playing).
