VR Sketch In-class

Overview

In this activity, you will be editing 3D models, drawing, etc. collaboratively in VR as an extension of sketchUp. Additionally, you will be bringing in 3D interior and architectural model, making models and choosing paints collaboratively in VR.

Setup- Before class

  1. Install and set up your VR Sketch- installation instructions

  2. Install SketchUp (only one person per each group will need it but its recommended for everyone to install if you want to try importing 3D architectural models from sketchUp and view tutorials to get started)

  3. Open SketchUp(select Simple) and select Windows -> Extension Manager -> Install extensions and choose the downloaded VR Sketch for PC/Mac file(.rbz file mentioned in VR Sketch installation). You should be able to see screen as below with VR Sketch extension installed.


4. In sketchUp, Click on Extensions , you should be able to see 'VR Sketch' option in it

5. You are all set. If you have additional time, select Extensions -> VR Sketch -> Send to VR on oculus quest and enter the 6-digit quest id from VR Sketch. Click Start Tutorials and Watch the tutorials in VR Sketch and explore.

In class Activity-

  1. Launch VR Sketch on your quest2

  2. One person from the group should open Sketch Up in the laptop. Click on Extensions -> VR Sketch -> Collaborative editing

  3. It will give a 9-digit code. Select 'Share your sketchUp model"





4. In Oculus Quest, the screen welcome screen will look like above. (If you don't see this screen, click on X menu button and choose cloud model(it will be in the rightmost corner in the menus)

5. Choose one of the demo models and explore it with your partner. Note- You will only be able to view it but can't edit demo or any other public cloud models.

6. To create your own project and collaborate to edit, Select Collaborate in cloud model settings and enter the 9-digit code.

7. Once you are in the same collaborative window, you should be able to talk and create the model together.

8. Try teleporting, making rectangular box, painting walls, scaling, drawing, rotating models, push-pull to make 3D objects, etc. in VR

Click on Menu- Select pencil, rectangular box, teleportation, etc. by selecting and releasing trigger to use it.

9. The host can select Windows(in sketchUp) -> 3D warehouse and try importing kitchen, bedroom, etc. models in the space. The host will also be able to see all the changes made in VR reflected on sketchUp.

10. Try collaboratively adding content and editing the interior designing scene.

11. Fill the survey !
